Correction on Ukraine
In our 19 June 2022 posting of a speech held at the LO Fete about the Ukraine conflict we asserted:
‘Whilst in Western Ukraine there are Hungarian, Romanian and Polish national minorities, about 20 percent of Ukraine’s population are Russian speakers, mostly located in an arc running from Northeast Ukraine along the Black Sea coast to Odessa.’
A reader has made us aware that these figures are incorrect. Whilst around 20% of all Ukrainians identify as Russian, a far higher number of 38 to 46% of all Ukrainians speak Russian, illustrating the anti-democratic nature of the Maidan government’s termination of the language law.
